Community Wildfire & Air Quality Update – Please Be Prepared
Kiʔsuʔk kyukyit everyone,
With several active wildfires in the East Kootenay and hot, dry weather expected to continue this week, we encourage all community members to stay informed and take steps to prepared
A Yellow-Level Air Quality Warning remains in effect for the East Kootenay, including Cranbrook.
Smoke can affect everyone, but those at greater risk include:
- Elders
- Infants and young children
- Pregnant individuals
- People with heart or lung conditions
- Anyone with chronic health concerns
If smoke levels increase, reduce strenuous outdoor activities and spend time indoors where the air is cleaner whenever possible.
If you are experiencing discomfort from the heat or smoke, or simply need a place to cool down and get cleaner air, community members are welcome to use the Health Centre and the Community Gym during regular operating hours, Monday through Friday. These spaces are available as a refuge during periods of poor air quality and extreme heat.
The Matthew Creek Wildfire has grown to approximately 567 hectares. Fire activity is expected to become more visible during the hottest part of the day. BC Wildfire Service crews, heavy equipment, helicopters, and aircraft continue to respond using strategies appropriate for the steep terrain.
Several other wildfires remain active throughout the region, reinforcing the importance of being prepared should conditions change.
Even if you are not currently under an Evacuation Alert or Order, every household should have a Go Bag packed and ready.

- Government-issued ID and important documents
- Prescription medications and medical supplies
- Cell phone charger and portable battery pack
- Wallet, cash, keys, and emergency contact information
- Clothing, sturdy footwear, and blankets
