A sow grizzly and cub have been reported by the gravel pit.
Please be bear aware and ensure your garbage is secure.
It’s that time of year where bears out and about trying to find food.
In previous years they have gotten into people’s garbage bins in community. Some steps you can take to make your home less attractive to bears include:
- Feed pets and store your pet food inside
Secure garbage bins with lids
Cleaning or keeping garbage bins smells to a minimum (putting baking soda in the bottom of the bin will reduce odors)
Freeze really smelly food items until you are ready to take the garbage to the landfill or it is garbage collection day.
The most effective way to minimize bear activity near your home is to manage garbage. The current garbage collection for the community is weekly, every Sunday (Saturday for Mayook). In order for garbage to be picked up, ʔaq̓amnik are reminded that:
- Garbage bags need to be tightly closed, double-tied, and placed in the allocated bins.
- There is no limit to the number of garbage bags for pick-up; bin doors must be able to be secured/closed to prevent attracting insects and animals.
If you have any concerns about a bin or notice increased bear activity in your area, please contact reception at the Band office at 250-426-5717.
