Ktunaxa Nation Catches Olympic fever!

January 22nd 2010

(Garry Slonowski - Ktuq̓ȼqakyam) - The Olympic torch arrived in the Ktunaxa Traditional Territory! There are ceremonies planned specifically for Akisqnuk with Lower Kootenay and St. Mary's participating in the Cranbrook and Creston events respectively.

Olympic spirit will hit Akisqnuk first, where twenty one Band Members - including Elders, youth, council members, and staff - will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic flame.

In September, RBC, one of the Olympic Torch Relay sponsors, approached Akisqnuk with an opportunity for 20 others from the First Nation to participate in the relay by carrying the Olympic flame. The Band Council and membership accepted the offer with great enthusiasm. Chief and Council then selected Aaron Nicholas, a young athlete and Akisqnuk First Nation member, to be the one to carry the flame into the community.

The Olympic flame will be met with a "winter carnival" celebration, including free food, traditional music, as well as the Invermere band "Stand by for the Bomb". Chief Wilfred Teneese will welcome the torch and torchbearers to the community, and Councilor Beatrice Stevens will then say a prayer for the flame as it continues its journey towards Vancouver and the 2010 games. All are welcome to attend the celebrations which will go from approximately noon to 2 pm at the administration yards.

The torch then moves southward towards Cranbrook where St. Mary's will be taking part in a celebration at the Cranbrook Rec Plex between 5:15pm and 8:00pm, including a welcome by Chief Cheryl Casimer. The Ktunaxa Nation Dance Troupe will also be performing prior to the event which is expected to be highly attended.

After the torch spends the night in Cranbrook, on Saturday it will make its way towards Creston, where Chief Chris Luke will provide a welcoming statement along with the Creston Mayor and dignitaries at the Creston Community Complex. The ceremonies start at noon, and are expected to run until 2pm before the torch makes its way towards Nelson.
